Embarking on a long-haul flight with a baby or toddler may not be every parent’s dream, especially in economy class. However, as a seasoned Sleep Coach and Parenting Educator who’s navigated numerous flights with little ones, I’m here to share essential tips to make your journey more enjoyable and less stressful.
1. PLAN WELL
Consider your family’s schedule and plan accordingly. Account for potential road travel and international flight check-in requirements. Schedule small naps before the flight and plan the main sleep approximately 3 hours after take-off when the cabin lights typically dim.
2. PACK WELL
The family’s littlest member always seems to require the most luggage. Anticipate your little one’s needs by deciding whether to bring your own travel cot, pram, carrier, or sling or access them at your destination. Create a mini flight survival kit for both you and your child. Here are some essentials:
Parent Kit:
A warm, comfortable change of clothes with a spare set.
Warm socks and lavender essential oil for relaxation.
Favorite herbal tea bags and snacks for yourself.
Rescue Remedy and melatonin gummies.
Toiletries for a mid-flight freshen-up.
A warm blanket and a neck pillow for added comfort.
Entertainment essentials like earphones, a battery pack, and an audible book or music.
Baby/Toddler Kit:
First aid supplies and essentials like spare dummies and wipes.
A well-stocked activity pack to keep your little one engaged. Aim for five sandwich-size Ziploc bags, each with a mini activity.
Lots of snacks
3. DON’T HOLD YOURSELF OR YOUR BABY TO THEIR ROUTINE
Acknowledge that your baby will be out of routine while travelling, and that’s okay. Prioritise getting some sleep for everyone. Consider using an extra pillow for added comfort, making it easier to share the load with your partner.
4. SHARE THE LOAD
If travelling with your partner, share the load. Families that share responsibilities tend to fare better on long-haul flights.
5. GET BACK ON ROUTINE IN THE NEW TIME ZONE
Upon reaching your destination, adapt to the local time rather than forcing your routine onto a new schedule. Manage your baby’s sleep by avoiding extended naps during the day, especially if you arrive in the morning. For late arrivals, establish a bedtime routine aligned with the current time zone.
Remember, readjustment may take a few days, but outdoor time and the Bodyclock Reset Method, which is outlined in my Sweet Sleep Program, can aid the process.
